12A and 80G Registration Guide

Empowering Your NGO with Tax Exemptions

Aug 15, 2025 5 min read By NGO Consultant

Charitable trusts and NGOs need 12A and 80G registrations to attract donors and enjoy tax exemptions on their income. This recognition is fundamental for building a sustainable social impact organization.

Understanding 12A Benefits

12A registration is a one-time process which grants exemption to the NGO from paying income tax on its surplus income. Without this recognition, even a non-profit organization is taxed at regular corporate rates on its total income.

Understanding 80G Benefits

80G registration allows donors to claim a deduction from their taxable income for the donations made to your NGO. This is a significant incentive for both individual and corporate donors, especially those fulfilling CSR mandates.

The application process has recently moved to a structured 5-year provisional and final registration cycle to ensure greater transparency.

Documents Required

  • Certified Copy of Trust Deed or MoA/AoA.
  • Certificate of Incorporation/Registration.
  • Detailed Activity Report for the last 3 years (if applicable).
